Noës

An old Valaisan hamlet, at the gates of Sierre, which once served as a pied-à-terre for the inhabitants of the Anniviers Valley (Val d'Anniviers) who practised transhumance between the vineyards of the plains and livestock and mountain agriculture.

From the 13th to the 20th century, the "Anniviards" were nomads who lived on the plains in the spring and autumn to tend their vines.

During their transhumance, the inhabitants of the villages of Saint-Jean, Mayoux and Pinsec moved as a community, taking their teacher with them. Noës then became a small part of Val d'Anniviers on the right bank of the Rhône.

It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that permanent inhabitants settled in Noës, coming from Val d'Anniviers but also from the region, as the opening of the aluminium factory in Chippis in 1908 created many jobs.

It was only in 1927 that the inhabitants decided to build the large church which now stands on top of a small hill, above the old village centre.

Nowadays, Noës has become a quiet suburb of Sierre, at the foot of the vineyards. Two good restaurants almost next to each other share a friendly village life.
