Stoos

This car-free village is the star destination of Muotatal, especially since the opening of the new funicular in 2017, which climbs and reaches the world record steepness of 110%, i.e. an angle of 47.7°.

This futuristic funicular takes the form of 4 barrels fixed to a frame. During the trip, the barrels roll to stay horizontal and passengers see the neighbouring barrels going up and down according to the slope.

A very impressive experience as, at the maximum steepness of the slope, you see the passengers of the neighbouring barrel(s) above or below you!

The village of Stoos, in itself, is rather disappointing. In the midst of tourist development, there is nothing particularly picturesque about it, apart from its small wooden church perched on a hill.

The surrounding landscape, however, is beautiful and if you go further afield you will find some very picturesque places, such as the marshy area just south of the village.

Stoos is also the starting point of the Klingenstock and Fronalpstock chairlifts, climbing to peaks with exceptional views of lakes and mountains.
