Watch out when you go up to the church: a Tschäggättä is watching you! The Tschäggättä are terrifying monsters that haunt the village streets from dusk during carnival week. In the past, they used to wave bells, scare young girls, pour ashes over their victims' heads and sometimes even break into houses, steal food and abuse the inhabitants. Banned in 1865, this unique carnival was reintroduced in a less brutal form at the beginning of the 20th century.
