Promenade to Portara (2)

At the beginning of the pier, this strange marble statue is sure to catch your eye. Contrary to what some believe, it is not Aphrodite but Ariadne, abandoned on Naxos by Theseus after she helped him escape from the Labyrinth. Created by German sculptor Wolf Bröll (1950-2016), it symbolically echoes the Portara, which was abandoned before becoming a temple.
