Saint John's ChapelAbstractLocated at the foot of the concrete giant, this chapel was actually built in 1931 during the construction of the first Dixence dam, which was located upstream from the current dam. It was restored during the construction of the Grande Dixence dam between 1953 and 1961, and its bell bears a Latin quotation from Virgil that is very appropriate for the location: ‘Hard work overcomes everything’. Masses were celebrated there throughout the construction period by the Capuchin friars of Sion.
